MONOLOGUE: HOUSING

Hello my name is Maru and I’m going to talk about housing. I think this is a good opportunity to talk about the place where I live and my dream house so I’ll try to give some of my ideas in three minutes.

I’ll start talking about my house. I live in a small cosy flat near to the Valencia football stadium. It has one double bedroom and a well equipped small kitchen. The dining-living room has a lot of natural light and is ideal for having meals with friends. It is not exactly in the city centre but it is in a good area of Valencia because I have everything I need: shops, supermarkets, cafes, a hospital, public transport and other several things. Apart from that, the most important thing for me is I’m quite near to my job and I can go to work by foot every day.

I’ve been living there with my boyfriend and my dog for two years. Currently, I’m renting the house because we can’t afford to buy a flat. Fortunately is not very expensive so we can live on quite well and also save some money every month.

The next point I’d like to talk about is my dream house. If I had to choose living in the countryside or in the city, I would choose the countryside. I know living in the city has some advantages but I prefer the quietness and the fresh air of the countryside. If I won the lottery, I would buy an enormous house with at least 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. My dream house would have a huge garden where I will be able to grow my own vegetables and where my dogs and children run and play every day.

Moreover, I would buy another house next to me for my parents because I know they also like the idea of living in the countryside and because I will need somebody who takes care of my dogs and children.

Anyway, I know dreaming is free but who knows, maybe someday I will win the lottery and I will be able to live in my dream house. Thank you very much for listening to me and have a nice day.

MONOLOGUE: APPEARANCE

Good morning, my name is Maru and I’m going to talk about appearance. In my opinion this is a difficult topic but I’ll try to explain some ideas in three minutes.

First of all, I’ll talk about the importance of appearance. Everybody knows that the first impression really counts because it’s what you see when you don’t know a person. However, we don’t have to judge a book for its cover, what in other words means; we have to give the opportunity to get to know other aspects apart from the physical ones.

On the other hand, if you are applying for a job that requires dealing with people face to face or you are going to a model casting, I think having a good appearance will be the first priority in order to get the job.

Secondly, I want to talk about people’s obsession with looking good. I believe that nowadays people care about their appearance more than they used to in the past. We live in a material world where having a perfect body or looking younger is more important than being a good person. The reason why this is happening is because the influence of the mass media, advertisement and fashion. In addition, this problem gets worse when are the young people who are really worried about their body because in some cases, this obsession can turn into some illnesses like anorexia or bulimia.

Finally I’ll give my opinion on plastic surgery. For the moment I’ve never needed a plastic surgery. I’m really afraid of hospitals and operating theatres so if it wasn’t absolutely necessary for my heath, I would never go there. I don’t like being judging so I don’t judge people who decide to have a plastic surgery to look better. I think they are free to do with their body and money whatever they want.

MONOLOGUE: TELEVISION

Good morning, my name is Maru and I’m going to talk about television. I think this is an interesting topic because nowadays the television plays an important role in our everyday lives. I’ll focus my monologue on three ideas: the advantages and disadvantages of watching television, the different programs that we can watch and my personal opinion.

One advantage of watching TV is that it is an excellent way of entertainment and relaxing. We can watch an hour of television before bed, after work or on a lazy weekend afternoon. We have a wide variety of channels to choose so it is impossible to be bored and find nothing to watch.

Another advantage is that it can be educational. We can watch documentaries and serials about several things. Even when we are watching movies, we can lean things like for examples languages.

However there are some disadvantages like for example that people spend too much time in front of television instead of doing other productive things. Moreover violence is really common on TV at present so we must be careful about what children watch to avoid that they copy this bad behavior.

Regarding to the programming, I believe that there are too much content that it is not interesting to watch. In other words what I mean is gossip programs and realities shows are rubbish and they must be ban on the TV. If I were the government, I would reduce considerably the hours of these programs.

Fortunately, there are other kinds of programs like debates, documentaries, series and movies that are much better for entertain us and even to have a critical thinking.

In my personal opinion, I can say that I’m not very keen on watching the TV. I mean, I sometimes watch the news and some movies but I prefer to spend my free time reading, cooking or practicing some sports. When you watch TV the time flies and I think you’re wasting your precious time.

Anyway, that’s all I have to say about this topic. I hope I wasn’t too boring and thank you very much for listening to me.

MONOLOGUE: EDUCATION

Good morning, my name is Maru and I’m going to talk about education. In my opinion, this is an important topic because a good education is related to an economic and social prosperity. I’ll focus my monologue on talking about my personal experience and the Spanish education system.

First of all, I’d like to start speaking about my personal experience as a student. I went to a religious school until 7^th grade. It was a bad experience for me because I had to go to church every day and I really hated the awful grey uniform that I had to wear. Fortunately, in secondary school, I went to a public secular school where I could go wearing whatever I want.

Furthermore, I remember, although it was such a long time ago, I was a diligent student and I adored doing the homework. I’ve never cheated in an exam; in fact, classmates have always copied from my exams. My favorite subjects were biology and chemistry and I’ve always got excellent marks in these exams. I strongly hated History because I found it extremely boring. I remember that once I fell asleep in a History class and everybody was laughing at me.   

The second point I’d like to talk about is the Spanish education system. We have a serious problem with school dropouts in our country and the government doesn’t take the proper measures to improve this situation. Actually in the last years, the public education has been deteriorating because of the government cutbacks. Nowadays, the public education system has fewer teachers and more students per classroom, which is a difficult situation if somebody has learning problems and needs a personalized attention.

The private education doesn’t have this kind of problems but unfortunately not everybody can afford it. The government has been subsidizing the private education instead of investing in the public one. Obviously, this measure is insufficient to improve the education system because in my opinion the education must be always free and available for everybody.

MONOLOGUE: ANIMALS

Good morning, my name is Maru and I’m going to talk about animals. I think this is a great topic for me because I consider myself as an animal lover. I’ll focus my monologue on two points which are how I met my pet and what I think about abandoned dogs.

First I’d like to talk about my pet, a dog called Bicho. Bicho is a mongrel dog which I found in a Dog shelter the first time I went to work as a volunteer. I have to say that it was love at first sight. My old dog, Nikita had died two months ago and I really missed the love of a pet. So when I discovered these little bulging eyes, I couldn’t avoid taking it home. And now, we’ve been together since 2011.

Thanks to Bicho, I discovered the satisfaction of helping abandoned dogs. When I have some free time, I go to help to a dog shelter. The activities that a person can do to help are cleaning the cages and kennels, feeding the animals, giving medicines to sick dogs, taking some dog for a walk and other several things. There is always something to do in a shelter. If you don’t have free time to go there, you could also help by giving a small amount of money every month to pay for the food and veterinary services.

The abandonment is a huge problem in our country because the pounds and shelters are overpopulated. For that reason, I believe we have to think carefully before we choose to have a pet. If we finally decide to have one, we should go to a shelter or a pound and adopt an abandoned animal. I’m sure the animal will express gratitude in some way and you’ll be doing something altruistic.
